The history of American family insurance began on October 3, 1927,  when insurance salesman Hermann Whitwire opened the doors of Farmers Mutual Insurance Company (not to be confused with Farmers Insurance Group) in Madison, Wisconsin. White believes that farmers are less risky than city drivers because they drive far fewer cars and nothing in the winter.
